Inspirational Australian mining women recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

Three leading women from Australia’s world-class mining industry have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday 2018 Honours List.

Erica Smyth AC from Jolimont WA has served as a Non-Executive Director of the Deep Exploration Technologies CRC, a director of mining equipment company Emeco Holdings Ltd and Chair of Toro Energy.

Erica was awarded the Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award for Women in Resources from CMEWA and was included in Women in Mining UK’s 2013 list of 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining.

Donna Frater AM from Binnaway NSW held a number of senior geologist roles with BHP’s BMA Coal and Rio Tinto.

Donna is a previous member of the MCA’s Workforce Standing Committee who also featured in Women in Mining UK 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining.

Elizabeth Swain AM of Launceston Tasmania received her award for significant service to the mining industry as a metallurgist and as a role model for female engineers.

Elizabeth was the only female engineer at Bell Bay Aluminium when she joined the company in 1969, and was the longest serving employee on her retirement in 2012.

These awards acknowledge the great contribution being made by women working in Australia’s world-class mining industry and the inspiration they provide to others.

The MCA congratulates Erica, Donna and Elizabeth on being recognised for their achievements.
